MOSAIC WORKSHOP

WITH PAUL LILLEY
Two Classes*: June 11th & 18th

10-1pm on 6/11

10-2pm on 6/18
$165 pp

*Must attend both classes to finish project

Class I (June 11th)

Students arrive with a simplistic 8 x 10 design or pattern (design examples available for download at registration) or choose one from a selection made available by the instructor once on site.  You’ll prepare your provided board, apply the chosen design to the surface under Paul’s guidance and start applying tiles. This session explores cutting techniques, proper placement of tiles and general best practices.  Students leave this class with their in-process mosaic project, tiles, loaned tools (tools must be returned at the June 18th class) and glue to complete at home at least 24 hours before the second class (need 24 hours to dry).

Class II (June 18th)

Students return to the studio with their mosaic project ready for grout and return the loaned tools. This session addresses the grouting and cleaning portions of the project.  You will leave Class II with instructions on how to complete the final cleaning at home 24 hours after the grout has dried.  Paul will also demonstrate indirect and reverse mosaic methods during this class.

About Paul

Paul has been creating mosaics for over 22 years, with 15 of those spent traveling traveling the world with his husband, who was in the U.S. Foreign Service. Many of his pieces are inspired by the culture and customs of the countries served. Now retired and living in Machias, ME, Paul finds a lot of inspiration in the beauty of Down East.  Using the ancient art of mosaic, Paul creates a wide variety of designs from pet portraits, landscapes, still life, garden features, and classic paintings reimagined using both ceramic and vitreous glass tiles. Each tile is hand cut and placed one by one to form the detail and composition. Born and raised in Suffolk, England, art has interested Paul for most of his life. While he has worked with multiple mediums (like oil paints, watercolors, sketching, and others), it wasn't until he relocated to Cyprus that he found a way to express himself through art - using the ancient art of mosaic.
